Amazon Weight Handling Fee India

A practical guide to understand how Amazon computes weight handling fee in India.

Weight Handling Fee: What Drives It

(1) Item Weight; is determined by the following factors:
(A) Package weight: There are several factors that determine the weight of an item:
  • Billing weight is taken as the higher of actual weight or volumetric weightVolumetric weight = (Length x Width x Height) / 5000.
  • Amazon adds 100gms as packaging weight for Standard shipments and 500gms for Heavy and Bulky shipments.
  • Weight handling fee is computed based on shipping weight, i.e. aggregated billing weight of all units in shipment + packaging weight.
(B) Package type: An item can be of two types, Standard and Heavy Bulky. An item is classified as Heavy and Bulky if it meets one or more of the following criteria:
  • Items from specific categoriesWashing machines, refrigerator, air conditioner, microwave, chimney, dishwashers, television, treadmills, cycles (wheel diameter > 20 in or 50.8 cm), large furniture (for example, beds, sofa sets, wardrobes and so on), deep freezers, printers, monitors, soundbars.
  • Item package weighs more than 22.5kg.
  • Either item package length, width, or height is greater than 183cm.
  • GirthGirth = [Length + 2 x (Width + Height)] is greater than 300cm.
  • Multi-box items or items requiring carpenter installation (non-DIY).

(2) Step Level

STEP is a performance-based benefits program run by Amazon. You start in Basic and can move to Standard, Advanced, or Premium based on your performance. Lower STEP-level charges are not one flat waiver across all cases; they vary by channel, zone, shipment type, and weight slab.

STEP LevelWhat Usually Changes
BasicBase rate-card charge.
StandardLower than Basic for many standard and heavy slabs.
AdvancedOften lower again, especially on standard-weight lanes.
PremiumUsually matches or improves on Advanced, depending on lane.

(3) Shipping Zone

For some channels (FBA) and for Heavy Bulky items, weight handling fee is charged based on distance travelled.

The distance is defined into three zones and each zone has a different fee:

Local: When pickup and delivery happen in the same city.
Regional: When pickup and delivery happen in different cities but within the same region.
National: When pickup and delivery happen in different cities and different regions.
